Hotel Miranda & Suizo Hotel Miranda & Suizo

History

The oldest hotel establishment in San Lorenzo de El Escorial

The Miranda & Suizo Hotel ***, or "El Miranda" as it is popularly known, is the oldest hotel establishment in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. In its origins (1846), part of the space it occupies today was called "Fonda de San Luis".

The first review of the hotel dates back to the end of the 19th century, when D. Isidro Miranda decided to convert the the old "House of Comedians" into a successful lodging business. Later it passed into the hands of his son Francisco Miranda, mayor of the municipality (1869-1871).

One of the first guests of that inn was Isabel II. When she was dethroned she spent a night in San Lorenzo de El Escorial on her way to exile, and not being able to stay in the royal rooms of her monastery, she stayed in the inn. That was when the musician Isaac Albéniz, still a child, played his first compositions here. Isaac really liked Jules Verne's novels, so one day he decided to become an adventurer and leave home, without saying anything to anyone, taking a train, without a ticket, to El Escorial where he gave some recitals).

At the beginning of the 20th century, the inn passed into the hands of the Veuthey family and since then it has been called Miranda & Suizo.
